Therapeutic Effect of OK-432 in Head and Neck Cancer

Summary
　 We have examined the anti-cancer effects of OK-432, a streptococcal immunotherapeutic agent, in head and neck cancer patients. Radiation therapy in combination with UFT and OK-432 elicited a marked therapeutic effect as compared with the therapy without OK-432. It was elucidated that, in this case, radiation and 5-FU inhibit the negative regulators of Th1-type T-cell response augmented by OK-432. In addition, a receptor 4/MD-2 genes. In patients with advanced oral cancer, an intratumoral injection of dendritic cells in combination with OK-432 inhibited markedly the growth of the tumors. It was strongly suggested that OK-432 may be a useful adjuvant by using it together with radiation, chemotherapy, or dendritic-cell therapy, in the treatment of head and neck cancer patients.
